HalloweeN, Michael Myers and masks are the topic of discussion all the time here. The New Year starts off with a request from a die hard Michael Myers admirer. Hardcore fan Craig Foreman (pictured) asked us to “take a step back in order to take a step forward in 2015″ (that phrase could mean many different things, but whatever).

Here’s an interesting interview with HalloweeN producer Malek Akkad. The discussion was conducted by Arab American Beat in 2010.

Back then, Malek Akkad kept some screen-used Michael Myers masks in the office of Trancas International Films in Hollywood, California. During the interview, we are treated to a few close glimpses of the masks. They belong to the films HalloweeN: The Curse of Michael Myers, Rob Zombie’s Halloween and Rob Zombie’s Halloween II.

As far as Halloween 6 mask replicas go, it seems that Silver Shampain Novelties (SSN) had it right with their line of H6 masks many years ago. SSN’s The Curse, Six and George Wilbur masks captured the look of the H6 Michael Myers mask that is seen in Malek’s office.

The likenesses of both of Malek’s RZ Michael Myers masks were recreated quickly by several mask makers in the community. The easy availability of the animatronic Michael Myers head may or may not have helped to develop the accuracy of many RZ Halloween replicas. The Michael Myers animatronic is also shown during the interview.

On a side note, the interviewer, Joseph Naggiar, made a mistake during his talk with Malek. It’s nothing too major, and it’s not related to HalloweeN very much. Naggiar asks Malek about other films that he’s working on at the moment.

Naggiar says to Malek, “Tell us a little bit about the sweeping historical epic The Princess of Alhambra that you’re working on with Oscar-winning screen writer Robert Bolt.” Robert Bolt co-wrote the screenplay for Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Bolt died in 1995, so Malek couldn’t have been working with him (although he could’ve been working with a script by Bolt, he couldn’t have been working with the man himself). If I didn’t love Lawrence of Arabia so much, I wouldn’t have felt the urge to clarify what was said.

The Michael Myers masks made by Sam McCain’s Horror Sanctum Studios made frequent appearances in this site’s ongoing “Featured Masks” series for very good reasons. The work that Sam put into his masks and replicas was passionate and painstaking; this commitment to putting out great masks gained HSS a loyal and dedicated following. Many serious Michael Myers and Halloween collectors had to own at least one mask that was made by the legendary Sam McCain and HSS.

Horror Sanctum Studios and Sam were incredibly prolific and offered a wide range of characters, but this tribute focuses specifically on their Halloween and Michael Myers work, including the mind-blowing Tyler Mane bust. Horror Sanctum demonstrated not only a love for the original Halloween, but also for its sequels and the Rob Zombie re-imaginings. A Michael Myers mask that seems to be from the film Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers but used during the production of Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers was discovered recently.

Member MrDillweedius shared photos with us of a Michael Myers mask that was given to his family after shooting of Halloween 6 wrapped up back in 1995. MrDillweedius has stated that the makers of Halloween 6 gave them the mask and that he is the brother of the actor who played Danny Strode in that film.

This particular Michael Myers mask has lost its hair and it was kept stored in the basement for many years. The mask does look like a Halloween 4 mask and it also may be the mask that the mysterious Background Michael Myers is wearing during Halloween 6 in a quick scene when Debra Strode is on the phone in her house.

A few special Michael Myers masks have traveled throughout the United States courtesy of Jamie Lee Curtis in order to get them signed by “every living member of the Halloween crew family.” During a Q&A alongside John Carpenter last October, after a screening of 1978’s Halloween at the American Cinematheque Los Angeles, Jamie Lee Curtis brought out one such autographed Michael Myers mask. These masks have been auctioned off for different causes, this particular one was donated by Jamie Lee to raise funds for the Cinematheque.

These Michael Myers masks are numbered and feature the autographs of John Carpenter, Tommy Lee Wallace, Charles Cyphers, P.J. Soles, Brian Andrews, and several others. They are mass-produced Michael Myers masks, so their worth lies in the signatures on them, but, more importantly, these masks also derive their value from the causes they ultimately help out.

Before appearing at a Horror Hound convention in late 2012, Jamie Lee Curtis didn’t know how much the horror fans appreciated her film work, most notably her role as Laurie Strode, the sister of Halloween’s Michael Myers. According to Jamie Lee, her one weekend appearance at Horror Hound raised $150,000 for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Jamie Lee had also been inspired by Malek Akkad’s Scare Foundation, a non-profit charity organization, to use her fame within the horror community for a “greater good.”

Since John Carpenter and the crew of 1978’s Halloween created the ghostly visage of Michael Myers from a cheap Captain Kirk mask, the look of America’s most beloved and feared killer has been constantly changing.

The masks of some films have been more loved than others, and with a new Halloween film starting production, now is as good a time as any to take a look back and hope that the newest incarnation of Michael Myers resembles what we like best.

After the first film, the converted 75 Kirk was stored away until 1981 and in Halloween II, we saw the same mask, but it had suffered from neglect and mistreatment, causing it to take on a grungier look. Dick Warlock’s wider head also stretched the mask, further altering its appearance. The original mask is by far the frontrunner for fan favorite and the mask we’re most likely to see echos of in the new film.

Halloween II Mask – $54.99

From there, Halloween 4 gave viewers a mask that while somewhat resembling Myers’ original mask, was much starker white, with intact eyebrows and sideburns. One might describe it as looking surprised, but Michael took on a new level of brutality while wearing it.

For Halloween 5, Michael’s mask remained white, but it’s look was totally revamped. With a longer neck and face, and a more menacing expression, Myers took on a new form. The H5 mask is pretty divisive amongst members of the mask community, while some love the bolder look, some see it as reminiscent of an anthromorphic anteater.

In Halloween 6, Michael’s mask went back to its roots, while retaining the angry look of the H5 mask. With a shorter neck, distinctive cheeks and accentuated lips, the H6 mask felt more like Myers than the previous iteration. Michael’s choice of latex in this film remains a fan favorite.

Once the series hit H20, Myers’ look was changed again…ignoring every film in the timeline since, H2, Michael received a more traditional looking mask. However, it was paired with a CG animated mask for several scenes, causing many viewers to do a double take.

With Resurrection, Michael took influence from nature once again, this time masking his face with what appeared to be a gorilla-human hybrid. With a sneering look and furrowed brow, this mask was very different from any of the others.

With Rob Zombie’s Halloween remakes, we were given the most traditional looking mask we’d seen in years, but throughout the RZ series, the mask statted to rot away, taking on a new form.

With Halloween comes the tricks and the treats, today we offer you a TREAT!

This is a modernized trailer for John Carpenter’s classic, HALLOWEEN. Viewing this trailer gives you a true sense of what this iconic movie’s trailer may look like were it released in 2015 rather than thirty seven years ago.

I have seen several attempts of a modernized trailer for my favorite all-time horror movie but never quite to this effect!

This fantastic fan-made trailer was posted to you tube by the very talented Adam Eyster.

In  part one of our 3rd Annual Top Ten Michael Myers Mask Replicas EVER, we counted down the Michael Myers masks from Number Ten to Six. In this second and final part we will reveal numbers five through one.

We start the countdown with the mask landing at NUMBER FIVE (last year at number seven) N.A.G.’s “2K” mask.   This limited mask is simply known as the 2k as this was the actual cost for the mask upon its release. The 2k offers great detail and hair very close to that of a real 75 Kirk. These masks now go for $2500-3000 and are hard to come by.  Below is member “theshape1974″s JC-70 customized copy:

Coming in at NUMBER FOUR is a mask making its debut to the countdown, the 98 Proto Cast offered by N.A.G.  In 1998 Don Post Studios laser-scanned one of their 1975 Kirks to make a new Kirk mask.  The resulting run of masks produced were a bit of a disappointment. However, a few proto masks surfaced and proved to be far superior in look.  Two N.A.G. masks were created from one of these Don Post Kirk proto masks, the “75K” and the “98 Proto Cast”.  Whereas N.A.G.’s “75K” mask was a retool of Post’s Kirk proto, the “98 Proto Cast” was a direct recast as the name suggests.  The result is a Kirk mask that is a perfect canvas for the Myers community converters to make into a great Michael Myers mask.  Below is a beautiful shot by member Psycho Si of a N.A.G. 98 Proto Cast converted by All Hallow’s Ghost:

This year’s NUMBER THREE (last year’s number one!) spot belongs to N.A.G.’s “75K” (or 75 Kirk) mask.

In 1998 Don Post Studios laser scanned a production pull 1975 Kirk mask in order to make a new Kirk offering. The resulting mask was the 98 Shatner. Two versions of this William Shatner mask were released, one a more expensive and detailed mask, and the other a more mass produced mask. There was also a 98 Shatner proto mask that was discovered which was an exceptional copy, retaining all of the details of this sculpt very nicely.

It was from this Don Post 98 Shatner proto mask that the N.A.G. 75k was derived.  Seen below is a 75K converted by Freddy Loper:

Climbing up a notch on this year’s countdown from three to NUMBER TWO is an old favorite that seems to get more and more popular with each passing year, the KH/DW (Ken Hertlein/Dick Warlock) mask.

This mask is the ONLY mask that was made with the artist having the privilege of viewing the actual hero mask used in Halloween and Halloween II first hand! After Dick Warlock portrayed Michael Myers in 1981’s Halloween II, he kept the mask he wore in the movie along with the knife, boots and coveralls. Sometime in the year 2000, he commissioned the very talented artist Ken Hertlein to come to his home and examine the hero in order to try and recreate this iconic mask.

Measurements of Mr. Warlock’s head were taken as well as various measurements of the hero Michael Myers mask. The look of the hair, eye cuts, spatial relations of the features, mask size and all other little nuances of the hero mask were all taken into account. The result is arguably the best Michael Myers replica mask the hobby has seen to date.

HE Came Home!  You can’t kill the boogeyman….and apparently you can’t kill our mask which has retaken the top spot!  At NUMBER ONE is our first repeat winner of the countdown, the very talented Justin Mabry’s (owner of Nightowl Productions and cofounder of Trick or Treat Studios) CREEP/SHAT!

The CREEP version of this mask comes as an already masterfully converted Michael Myers mask, straight from Justin Mabry himself. With its ghastly white paint up and solid quality, this is the best option for many people who want a very nicely done Michael Myers replica mask ready to wear right out of the box.

For those fans who would rather have the mask in a Captain Kirk form (or for those who like to send a Kirk mask to be customized into a Michael Myers by the artist of their choice) the SHAT (short for Shatner) mask is offered. Both of these masks are of excellent quality and have great detail whether you are looking for a Kirk or a Michael Myers replica mask.

It’s time Michael. Halloween is nearly here and the stage is being set once again for the best holiday of the year! Let’s start this year’s celebration with our 4th Annual Top Ten Michael Myers Mask Replicas EVER countdown!  Last year Nightowl’s “SHAT” became this annual countdown’s first two-time winner, knocking off the previous reigning champ, N.A.G.’s “75K”. Will the SHAT get its third top spot victory or will the 75k even the score by also becoming a two-time winner? Or is it time for a new mask to be king of the mountain?

We start this year’s countdown with NUMBER TEN (same position as last year), Dennis Beckstrom’s DBII. Dennis was a long-time employee at Don Post studios and was the perfect candidate to do an original sculpt which would capture the look of the Don Post 1975 Kirk. Dennis studied several pics of the elusive 75 Kirk from every angle and spent two-and-a-half years on this project perfecting the piece. The result was one of the best and most sought after masks in the hobby.  Pictured is member Sheriff Brackett’s H2-flavored copy :

Coming in at NUMBER NINE (last year’s number six) is an old favorite and still one of the best Michael Myers mask replicas ever made, the mask known as the NIGHTMARE. The Nightmare was born when Justin Mabry (Nightowl Productions) clay pressed a real Don Post 1975 Kirk, which is the same mask that was converted to the Michael Myers mask we see in John Carpenter’s Halloween. The Nightmare has been made by various other mask makers since its original Nightowl debut, including MMP (Mask Maker Productions) and N.A.G. (Nikolas Art Gallery).  Seen below is member “Myersguy1998’s” copy finished and cast by Nik of NAG:

NUMBER EIGHT (absent from last year’s countdown) is a timeless classic, Lee Romaire’s SECOND STAB. The award winning special f-x artist had first attempted a Myers replica with his sold effort the “Whitey” mask. However it was Lee’s second attempt (thus the name “Second Stab”) that he hit pay dirt with. This mask captures the look of the Myers mask as it looked when Nick Castle wore the mask in Halloween like no other!  Representing this mask for this year’s countdown is member Werner Fielder’s gorgeous copy:

At NUMBER SIX on this year’s countdown (number nine last year) is N.A.G.’s MOVIE MOLD KIRK a.k.a. The MMK. This Michael Myers mask was made to replicate the look of the 1975 Don Post Kirk from which the hero mask used in Halloween (1978) was derived from. The mass-produced 1975 Don Post Kirk mask had several molds used during production, each having a few variances in their overall look. In  part one of our 4th Annual Top Ten Michael Myers Mask Replicas EVER, we counted down the Michael Myers masks ranking from numbers ten to six. In this second and final part we will reveal numbers five through one.

Part two of the countdown starts with this years NUMBER FIVE (number two last year), the legendary KHDW (Ken Hertlein/Dick Warlock) mask. This mask is the ONLY mask that was made with the artist having the privilege of viewing the actual hero mask used in Halloween and Halloween II first hand! After Dick Warlock portrayed Michael Myers in 1981’s Halloween II, he kept the mask he wore in the movie along with the knife, boots and coveralls. Sometime in the year 2000 he commissioned the very talented artist Ken Hertlein to come to his home and examine the hero in order to try and recreate this iconic mask. Measurements of Mr. Warlock’s head were taken as well as various measurements of the hero Michael Myers mask. The texture of the hair, eye cuts, spatial relations of the features, mask size and all other little nuances of the hero mask were all taken into account. The result is arguably the best Michael Myers replica mask the hobby has seen to date.  This is my copy that was recently transformed into my dream H2 mask by my good friend James Carter:

Coming in at NUMBER FOUR (rising three from number seven last year) is Nightowl’s NIGHTMARE MAN 78 “4-Stamp” (a.k.a. “4-stamper” or “NM78 4-Stamp”). Although there were other versions of this Michael Myers mask, the one that is considered by most to be THE version to have is this very limited, original “4-stamp” version. The “4-stamp” part of the name is due to the mask having four distinct stamps on the back of its neck. The first one states the name of the company (Nightowl Productions), the second states the owner/artist of Nightowl (Justin Mabry), the third states the name of the Michael-Myers.net member who had the 75 Kirk from which the mask was pressed from (Billy Kirkus), and the fourth stamp states the name of the mask itself (Nightmare Man 78). Only nine or ten of these Michael Myers masks were made. Shown below is member Deathwalk79’s excellent copy:

At NUMBER THREE is last year’s winner, Nightowl production’s SHAT mask. There are two available versions of this mask, the CREEP version comes as an already masterfully converted Michael Myers mask, straight from Justin Mabry himself. With its ghastly white paint up and solid quality, this is the best option for many people who want a very nicely done Michael Myers replica mask ready to wear right out of the box.   For those fans who would rather have the mask in a Captain Kirk form (or for those who like to send a Kirk mask to be customized into a Michael Myers by the artist of their choice) the SHAT (short for Shatner) mask is offered. Both of these masks are of excellent quality and have great detail whether you are looking for a Kirk or a Michael Myers replica mask.  Below is member “Hebudd’s” SHAT:

This year’s NUMBER TWO spot (last year at number five) goes to N.A.G.’s “2K” mask. This limited mask is simply known as the 2k as this was the actual cost for the mask upon its release. The 2k offers great detail and hair similar to that of a real 75 Kirk.  Below is member “CollectiblesUL” copy finished by Freddy Loper:

Time for the top spot! It appears that neither the Nightowl SHAT nor the NAG 75K wishes to be forgotten anytime soon! After the SHAT won the top spot in our first countdown, NAG’s 75K returned the favor the following year only to have the SHAT recapture the crown for the second time last year. NAG has now matched that feat.

This year’s NUMBER ONE (last year’s number three) spot belongs to N.A.G.’s “75K” (or 75 Kirk) mask making the 75K the second mask in our countdown’s history to claim the title twice! In 1998 Don Post Studios laser scanned a production pull 1975 Kirk mask in order to make a new Kirk offering. The resulting mask was the 98 Shatner. Two versions of this William Shatner mask were released, one a more expensive and detailed mask, and the other a more mass produced mask. There was also a 98 Shatner proto mask that was discovered which was an exceptional copy, retaining all of the details of this sculpt very nicely. It was from this Don Post 98 Shatner proto mask that the N.A.G. 75k was derived.  Seen below is a gorgeous 75k converted “H2 style” by James Carter and owned by member “its time Michael”:

Congratulations to Nikolas Art Gallery for reclaiming the top spot.  After four annual polls, N.A.G. and Nightowl have dominated the top spot, each claiming the top position twice. With the next Halloween movie slated to be released on October 19th, 2018 we have plenty of time for anticipation as well as speculation!  One thing we know about the next movie is that it is NOT going to be a reboot.  I have long wished that the next movie would “right the wrongs” of previous sequels. Although some did not like Halloween II and the introduction of the “sister” angle and some (including myself) loved Halloween 4, I think Halloween II was the last really good Myers sequel that didn’t create too many problems for a continuing storyline that worked.  After Halloween II the storylines just didn’t live up to my expectations.  If this next film could simply take off where Halloween II ended, I think the next movie could be something special.

The current information known concerning the eleventh Halloween movie gives me hope that this will indeed happen. The co-writer of the next film, Danny McBride, has stated that “we’re focusing mainly in the first two movies and what that sets up and then where the story can go from there.”

It seems very likely that if the mythos of the first two films is followed that we will see Myers badly burned considering the end of Halloween II.  While Myers could certainly simply find another mask, I like the idea of a “damaged mask”.   One thing I liked about Rob Zombie’s masks in his Halloween installments, was that Myers wore masks that respected the damage that had been inflicted upon the masks due to abuse, rot and so on.  With a movie that follows the original Halloween II, a burned type of mask would be idea for my tastes. Although you could certainly have a maskless, severely burned Myers, I would definitely favor a burned mask instead of a sans mask Myers any day!

If we do see a Myers wearing a burned mask for the next film how severe will it be?

It could be that the producers will tone down some of the realistic effects of what a burned latex mask would really look like to give Myers a mostly recognizable look. If that were to happen the mask could end up looking similar to this:

Another option is they could go for a compromise between realism and recognition and have the mask depict a look where part of the mask is still recognizable and the other half burned away and fused into Myers’ flesh:

The team could also choose to do a mostly charred mask like at the end of Resurrection (only to a greater degree of damage) where both sides of mask and hair are burned crispy.

Realistically we all know that there would be nothing left of Myer’s mask (nor face!) after the events of Halloween II that was even remotely recognizable but realism is not why we watch these movies!  I personally would prefer either of the first two looks above.  What would you like to see as the next look of Myers…one of these, a totally charred and melted mask or for Myers to find a new mask?  If he does end up getting a new mask, maybe he will revisit the local hardware store once again.  After all, if this new movie was to pick up where the original Halloween II left off, it would only be the next day!
